Yoder & Frey Kissimmee 2021

In the months leading up to the 2021 Kissimmee Winter Sales, Yoder & Frey built a new sales team of highly respected sales professionals from across the US heavy plant and machinery sector, as well as building a new 'home market' and international audience.

On the 10^th to 13^th February 2021, Yoder & Frey celebrated the 47^th Winter Sale in Kissimmee, Florida. Being the founders of this sale, Yoder & Frey have attended every year since its conception in 1974, and despite Covid the 2021 sale was a resounding success.

Whilst Covid was a threat to the Kissimmee sale this year, several auction houses decided to proceed with a live sale, with Yoder & Frey being one of them, all be it with covid restrictions in place.  Marketing to a global audience at all sales, as well as the US market, Yoder & Frey attracted international interest from 78 countries globally including 48 US States, with the number of registered bidders increasing by a third over the previous sale in February 2020.

Yoder & Frey put over 4,000 lots over the ramp during the three days with 65% of all sales came from floor-bidders on the days of the sale, and 35% of all sales being online. Top buying countries by hammer totals, in order, were: USA, Puerto Rico, The Netherlands, Guyana, and the Bahamas. However, such is the popularity of this sale, buyers came from as far away as Africa, New Zealand, Australia, South America, Russia, Scandinavia, central Europe, and the Caribbean.

"Predictably online bidding increased in 2021, compared to 2020, by a massive 50%, however, what was interesting was the number of actual bidders that physically turned up on the day to bid in person" comments Trent Shaftner, Sales Manager with Yoder & Frey, "We also had almost 1000 first time registrations, with a 190 successfully purchasing equipment. Running a 'live sale' certainly appealed to US buyers who turned up in great numbers, however, as expected, the international buyers did stay away due to travel restrictions."

Consignors to this sale were from an international audience, totaling 157 vendors. Whilst this is seen as a local sale with 106 of those sellers coming from the US, sellers came from 15 countries globally, such is the reach of Yoder & Frey.

Chris Deason, from Yoder & Frey, who focusses on the OEM market had the following observations, "Availability right now is down, with little low hours gear on the market. OEMs are clearly holding onto stock, starving the market, possibly to drive prices up! This then trickles down to dealers who are finding even harder to get new stock, and in turn are also  hanging on to inventory, and I'm repeatedly hearing of dealers receiving part delivery of orders placed."

Covid has accelerated retirement decisions in the market by up to five years, with the acquisition by larger organizations of small to medium sized contracting firms becoming commonplace. The result being that these businesses then rotate stock in those smaller businesses acquiring newer machinery, from auctions like Yoder & Frey, whilst disposing of the older stock at similar sales. That said prices were strong and will continue to be so for the rest of this year with private consignors exiting the market due to Covid are becoming all too common, and for now that is where stock is coming from.

Used construction machinery and agricultural equipment has long been seen as an international commodity, traded around the world to where it is needed, hence the broad international interest at this sale, and equipment leaving the US. As Covid has affected both the US and global economy, construction and infrastructure projects have been put on hold over the last 12 months. The Keystone pipeline project was shut down and drilling and exploration on public land has also been halted.
